Imagine waking up to discover everything you believe about your life never happened. That’s the personal disaster explored in mystery thriller Pali Road, starring Michelle Chen (You Are the Apple of My Eye), Jackson Rathbone (Twilight), Sung Kang (Fast and Furious series) and Henry Ian Cusick (Lost). Named for the scenic highway on Oahu associated with local supernatural lore, the film follows a young doctor (Chen) who wakes from a terrible car accident to learn she has an established life about which she remembers nothing. Married to a man (Kang) who she knows as the rival of her boyfriend (Rathbone), and mother to a five year old son, her concerned family denies that the life she remembers ever happened.
The official trailer is suitably nightmarish, as we see her unable to accept her prosperous life, terrified by the sight of a child she doesn’t recognize, and slowly alienating her freaked out family and husband. Her sessions with the therapist (played by Cusack) recall literature more than film to me – specifically, I’m reminded of Revenge by Stephen Fry – but then again, the Star Trek nerd in me is screaming “There are four lights!”
Pali Road directed by Jonathan Lim from a script by Victoria Arch and Doc Pedrolie, and produced by Daxing Zhang, Kenneth Burke, and Jonathan Lim. Anthony Lim of Cuixing Media, Jon Chiew of Huace Media Group Grace Zhang and Geng Ling of Dadi Digital Cinema & China Film Assist, and Ricardo S. Galindez and Roy J. Tjioe of Island Film Group executive produce. The film is set to have its world premiere during the 2015 Hawaii International Film Festival on November 16, with an encore screening held on the 21st.
